The Beauty of Wandering

I openly share with you some of the things I've captured with my lens when I least expected to see anything. Visual wanderings are some of my favorite kinds. I've learned to treasure the beauty that we'll see if we just stop long enough to escape the rushing crush of living.

Wandering vines

Wandering vines

On a recent "photo wander" in Nazareth, Pa, I came across a lovely display of wintry vines.

Icicle

Icicle

Early morning sun highlights a large, lone icicle outside my bedroom window.

Seed

Seed

A maple tree seed rests in the middle of a soaked road. Sometimes we have to stoop to see the beauty of the ordinary.

Window

Window

A clapboard home and slat window in Dajabon, Dominica Republic.

Zebra Grass

Zebra Grass

Flower plumes and once-green leaves make for a poetic scene against a setting sun.

Prickly Tree

Prickly Tree

A Saguaro Cactus in the desert near Phoenix, Arizona.

Chopped

Chopped

A light snow covers newly-cut wood in preparation for winter's hardest.

Waves and Wings

Waves and Wings

Three Dunlins search the beach for food as the wind whips the surf high into the sky on an early November morning.

Moonfull

Moonfull

An extreme telephoto camera lens captures the details of a full moon. Digital photography made this image possible through significant enhancements in image capture quality.

Swing Scream

Swing Scream

Some photos just scream emotion. This one certainly does!

Scallop and surf

Scallop and surf

With the tide well away, half a scallop shell remains burrowed in the sand.

Bar Harbor

Bar Harbor

A street lamp lightly glows against the sky of a setting sun in Maine.

Hopper

Hopper

A very large grasshopper along the road in the Louisiana bayou. Bugs were everywhere you could look! Up close and very personal!

Bees and pollen

Bees and pollen

Bees gather pollen from roadside flowers. Usually, we just zip past the decor of nature. This time we stopped and simply enjoyed the moment.

Ship's Gear

Ship's Gear

This was a wonderful find as we spent time wandering through the settlement at Jamestown, Va.

Spanish Moss

Spanish Moss

Spanish Moss in the Louisiana bayou. What an amazing ecosystem! We spent a couple of days exploring the alligators, plants and bugs. What a great place to wander!

Orb Weaver

Orb Weaver

A spotted Orb Weaver (neoscona crucifera) spins it's web in the twilight hours. Orb Weavers will create a rather large, orb-shaped web around buildings and structures, usually a few feet off the ground. This one had it's web attached to the house and a Tikki torch 6 feet away.

Perspective

Perspective

This was the airplane window view over West Virginia, about 30,000 feet, several years ago. Gorgeous above, not so much below the clouds. Perspective, although not always truthful, can make a huge difference.

Burkina Moto

Burkina Moto

Riding a moto in the bush, east of Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, West Central Africa. My driver was an amazing navigator as we slipped through bent saplings and rutted trails.

Tree Frog

Tree Frog

This little Eastern Gray Tree Frog was stuck to a swiss chard leaf in my garden this week. A lively little fellow who was a joyous surprise while enjoying some outside work.

The Big Duck

The Big Duck

Sometimes you come across things that just take you by surprise. Such was the case in Flanders, Long Island, NY, when I saw "The Big Duck" along Route 24. I just had to stop!

LI Sound

LI Sound

Rain was coming, heavy rain, and I needed to settle for the night. When I woke the next morning I was blessed by this scene immediately out the back door of my motel. The Long Island Sound. What a great place to rest.

Sandgrass

Sandgrass

This was just one of those "finds" as I wandered the shoreline with my wife one trip to the beach. Lovely!

Coolant

Coolant

When you look hard enough, you'll see all sorts of really cool things. These were small pools of coolant on my driveway. They were very small, nearly walked right past them

Pansies

Pansies

I don't recall where this was made. But I never forget the image. One of my favorites.

Night Mercury

Night Mercury

I was challanged, a long time ago, to take make one photo a day for an entire month. There were some days when I got desperate as the clock ticked towards midnight. This was one of those nights.

Rhodies

Rhodies

As winter gave way to spring, the former beauty of a rhododendron bush was all that was left from the ravages of cold, ice and wind.

Blob Toad

Blob Toad

The strangest things sometimes appear around my home. One evening we found this toad covered with a very thick film of blobby-ness. As the night ensued, the film slowly disappeared until the toad was dry and hopped off the railing.

Jelly Belly

Jelly Belly

A moon jellyfish is illuminated with colorful light in an aquarium tank. A cool find on one of my wanderings to Mystic Seaport Aquarium.

Sacrifice

Sacrifice

A spider feasts on an entangled dragon fly - another find outside my home. The next day all that was left of the fly was skeleton and wings.

Rain on leaf

Rain on leaf

I love watching it rain. Martha's Vineyard provided a fantastic backdrop for it, too. I had a cup of coffee, my camera and just let my mind wander to relaxing places.
